Resale platforms boom as retail gets a circular makeover
Brands are turning to resale platforms to captivate younger, environmentally and cost-conscious shoppers. Led by the fashion industry, which expects to see secondhand sales almost double between 2022-2027, opportunities are rife across all industries.
Beauty resale
#ResaleBeauty is a notoriously tricky sector to crack. New US e-tailer This is Beauty rigorously checks products are safe to use before reselling. The company has partnered with 500 brands, giving a second life to 8000 products with missing lids, dented containers or small product leakage.
Food resale
UK technology company Gander has been shortlisted for an Earthshot Prize. With a mission to better connect shoppers with yellow-label reduced supermarket items, the company reduces waste and gives food a second chance to be sold.
Fashion resale
Beyond Retro (UK) has launched its Denim Shop alongside a Pieces From Our Past to Save Our Future campaign. It enables shoppers to buy retro denim options with ease, filtering by size, gender, aesthetic and price.
Tech resale
Apple has opened up its focus to include refurbished phones and devices, including the sale of refurbished MacBooks from as recently as 2023. In India, iPhone resales have increased by four times the global average.
