Following SXSW's hybrid comeback this year, we zoom in on the music, tech and innovation festival, exploring the key fashion trends spotted at the offline events.

See it first from the streets of Austin, Texas, here on WGSN.

1. The bodycon dress

The consumer appetite for stylish pieces that don’t compromise on comfort takes shape in the figure-hugging bodycon, fuelling the comfy party trend.

This dress appears in simple silhouettes and single colours – dopamine brights come to the fore for the summer season, reflecting an optimistic mood. Its skin-tight fit nods to sensual styling, especially when combined with cutouts.

2. The graphic tee

Seen on men and women alike, graphic tees with youth-led motifs are styled up to create fashion-led looks. Natural to music festivals, band tees are a key item, often carrying names from past decades, especially the 1980s and 1990s.

Grunge and punk references are prominent, but other styling directions see inspiration in athleisure and pared-back aesthetics.

3. The matching set

Co-ord sets in materials such as jersey appeal to the preference for comfort-led pieces.

On-trend design details are paramount to update this quintessential summer item and respark consumer desire. From bold cutouts and ties to ruching and twists, subtle pattern play is crucial to balance newness and commerciality.

4. The resort shirt

The trusty resort shirt is seen in varying combinations of colours, amping up the festival mood with feelgood prints and graphics.

This button-up shirt catches the eye even from afar with all-over or repeat prints, making a statement and offering a visual impact that will appeal to young consumers.

5. The cowboy boot

Not to be missed in Texas, home to the ‘Cowboy Capital of the World’, #CowboyBoots are regaining popularity among Gen Z, accounting for more than 250m views on TikTok.

This trend capitalises on younger consumers’ interest in all things vintage. Ankle boots emerge as a more commercial option over longer lengths, uplifted through details such as embossing, metal studs and fabric mixing.
